The “Minsk Tractor Works” (MTZ) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers. In Germany, two eras are particularly significant:
- The rounded one (MTS 50/52): In the 60s and 70s, the backbone of agriculture in East Germany. With the rounded hood and characteristic radiator grille, today an absolute cult classic.
- The angular one (MTS 80/82): The modernization with the large “panorama cab” (or the smaller sport cab). More power, more angular design, but still the proven technology under the hood.
Although built in the millions, it’s hard to find well-preserved examples today. Most still serve as indestructible yard tractors or in the forest.
Technology & Special Features

A Belarus has technical solutions that were rare in the West but brilliantly simple.
Technical highlights:
- The front axle: The 4WD models (MTS 52/82) use a portal axle with bevel gear drives. This provides enormous ground clearance – ideal for forestry or deep field work.
- Oil cleaning: Instead of paper filters, a centrifuge was often used. Anyone who knows the whirring sound after switching off the engine knows what we mean.
- The compressor: Almost every Belarus had a compressed air system from the factory – a huge advantage for trailer operation.
