Why We Swear by Oracal for Tractor Stickers
You know the feeling: The engine finally runs smooth and steady again, the transmission sings its song, and the paint gleams in the sun. Hundreds of hours of work are in your Bulldog. But savings are often made right at the end – on the lettering.
Nothing is more annoying than when the “Lanz” lettering or the type plate fades after one summer or comes off at the first contact with diesel.
That’s exactly why we at eilbulldogversand.de make no compromises. We use high-performance films from Oracal (Orafol) for our stickers and lettering. Here’s why this matters for your tractor.
A Tractor Is Not a Living Room Wall
Stickers on a Bulldog have to withstand completely different stresses than a wall decal. This is where the wheat separates from the chaff:
- Resistance to diesel and oil: An old tractor “marks its territory” sometimes, and a drop might go astray during refueling. Cheap films swell on contact with fuels or lubricants and peel off. The Oracal series we use (especially the High-Performance Cast films) are chemical-resistant. One wipe and done.
- The “painted-on” look: Nobody wants thick, plastic-looking edges on their hood. Oracal high-performance films are extremely thin (often only 0.05 to 0.07 mm). The effect: After application, the film bonds so perfectly with the surface that the lettering looks like it was painted or stenciled on – exactly as it should be for an authentic restoration.
- Heat resistance at the radiator and engine: The Lanz’s thermosiphon radiator or the hot-bulb engine hood get hot. Our films handle temperature fluctuations without becoming brittle or cracking.
- No fading in the sun: Many tractors stand for hours in blazing sun at meets. With cheap films, the bold red quickly turns pink or the deep blue becomes milky. Oracal films guarantee color fidelity for years (for black/white even up to 8-10 years outdoors).
Cast Film vs. Standard
Why do our stickers also hold on rivets, beads, and curves? We primarily use cast films like the Oracal 751C or 951. Unlike cheap calendered films, these have no “memory effect.” This means: When you stick them over a curve on the fender, they stay there and don’t try to shrink back.
Pro Tip: How to Apply Stickers Properly on Your Tractor
To get the full benefit of the film quality, here are three tips from the Eilbulldog workshop:
- Degreasing is mandatory: Brake cleaner or isopropanol are your best friends. The surface must be absolutely grease-free (watch out for wax residues from polishing!).
- Not in freezing cold: Don’t apply your lettering in a cold shed at 5°C. The film needs at least 10°C (ideally 15-20°C) to develop its full adhesive strength.
- Take your time: The adhesive needs about 48 hours to fully cure. So wait a bit before the first pressure washer use or the next drive.
